Getting Started

Powering on the Device

  1. Unwrap the provided cable and wall adapter and plug the USB-C end of the provided cable into the left slot of the circuit board. Next, power your device on.

Connecting to Wi-Fi

  1. Once your device is powered on and you can see an animation playing on the LEDs, the device should broadcast a new Wi-Fi network named AviationMaps-AP. Connect to it using your phone or laptop.
  2. Once connected, a captive portal may automatically load on screen. If this is not the case, you may connect manually by opening a browser and visiting http://4.3.2.1 on the phone or laptop connected to AviationMaps-AP.
  3. On this website, enter your existing home Wi-Fi credentials in the fields provided, and your device will attempt to connect to your home network to access the internet.
  4. On a successful connection, your device will automatically fetch and display the latest weather data. Congratulations! You are now set up!
Note: any misspelling in your network SSID or password will cause a failed connection. Retry the steps on this page until the device is connected. For further help, email tech@aviation-maps.com with your issue and we will do our best to help.

Understanding Your Map

In case you are unfamiliar with aviation terminology, this is a brief overview of VFR Charts and what the colors mean.

VFR Charts

  • VFR (Visual Flight Rules) charts are used by pilots to aid in flying when flying in good visibility.
  • Obstacles and landmarks are noted, so that they can be easily identified from the sky when flying.
  • VFR charts are some of the most recognizable charts in aviation, created by the FAA and updated in 56-day cycles.

Explanation of the Colors

  • VFR: Best weather conditions.
    • Cloud ceiling: 3000+ feet above ground
    • Visibility: 5+ miles
  • MVFR: Stands for Marginal VFR. Still ok to fly VFR.
    • Cloud ceiling: 1000-3000 feet above ground
    • Visibility: 3-5 miles
  • IFR: Poor weather conditions. A special IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) license is required to fly.
    • Cloud ceiling: 500-1000 feet above ground
    • Visibility: 1-3 miles
  • LIFR: Stands for Low IFR. IFR license still required, and visibility is very poor.
    • Cloud ceiling: <500 feet above ground
    • Visibility: <1 mile
